Park Reserve Status
This area is designated as a National Park Reserve, which means it's protected and managed like a national park while respecting Indigenous rights and land claims in the area.
Park Location
History
Pituamkek, meaning 'at the long sand dune' in Mi'kmaq, has been used by Indigenous peoples for over 4,000 years. The area contains archaeological sites of significant cultural importance. The establishment of the park reserve in 2024 was a collaborative effort between the Mi'kmaq of Prince Edward Island and Parks Canada to protect both the natural environment and the cultural heritage of the region.
Landscapes
The park reserve features a series of barrier islands and sand dunes that create a unique coastal ecosystem. These landscapes provide critical habitat for various species and act as natural protection for the mainland against storm surges.
Wildlife
Pituamkek is home to several endangered species, including the piping plover and the northern long-eared bat. The diverse habitats support a variety of bird species, making it an important area for bird conservation.
Activities
While still under development, future visitors can anticipate opportunities for bird watching, guided cultural tours, and educational programs highlighting the area's ecological and cultural significance.
